The story of the ancient city of Petra began in the 4th century BC by an Arab tribe known as the Nabateans. This tribe was an ancient tribe living in and around Jordan today and began using Petra as an important trade center. Petra's location is strategically important due to its intersection of rich trade routes and its proximity to water resources. The Nabateans used the advantage of its location to enrich Petra and build magnificent structures.

In the 1st century BC, with the expansion of the Roman Empire on its eastern borders, Petra came under Roman rule. During this period, Petra experienced its golden age. Under the influence of Rome, Petra's trade volume increased, the city became even richer and was decorated with magnificent structures. The famous El-Khazneh (Temple of the Treasury) was also built during this period.

Petra's golden age ended with the collapse of the Roman Empire. The empire's loss of power and the change of trade routes caused Petra's trade to decline. In addition, with the Arab conquests in the 7th century, Petra's importance decreased even more. As a result, Petra was forgotten over time and hidden under the sands. Petra's rediscovery began in the early 19th century when European explorers visited the region. With the discovery of Europeans, Petra's worldwide fame increased. Petra was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 and has since become a world-renowned tourist attraction.
